A Giant Kandinsky Exhibition Is Coming To Sydney This Summer

Explore Bourgeois' spiders and Kandinsky's vibrant colours in two separate exhibitions hosted at the Art Gallery of NSW.

The 2023–24 Sydney International Art Series is bringing the works of three incredible artists down under for a Sydney-exclusive exhibition. The works of Wassily Kandinsky and Louise Bourgeois will take centrestage at the Art Gallery of New South Wales this summer while the Museum of Contemporary Art will host the largest in-depth presentation of celebrated British-German artist Tacita Dean’s works. The exhibitions are expected to attract around 28,000 art lovers to the city and inject $21m into the economy in a major coup for Sydney’s art scene.

Wassily Kandinsky was a groundbreaking artist of the 20th century. Largely credited as one of the pioneers of abstract art, Kandinsky’s works are known for their vibrant geometric forms, lines and shapes. The Kandinsky exhibition will be hosted in the South building and is coming from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. Find more information here.

French-American artist Louise Bourgeois, on the other hand, is best known for her large-scale sculptures and installations that largely explore her own human experiences and memories. The Bourgeois showcase will be displayed in two contrasting ‘day and night‘ spaces at the major exhibition gallery and the Tank in the recently renovated Art Gallery of NSW with over 120 artworks displayed. The new exhibition is set to feature some of the most trailblazing works of these artists including Bourgeois’ Crouching Spider 2003 and Destruction of the Father 1974, and Kandinsky’s Landscape with Rain 1913 and Circles on Black 1921. A total of 150 captivating works by the artists will be featured at the exhibition.

Also exciting is the upcoming showcase of artist Tacita Dean’s work at the Museum of Contemporary Art, set to be the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. Art lovers can expect drawings, photos, installations and more, all exploring themes of memory, history and time.

“Securing these extraordinary, world-renowned artists for the Sydney International Arts Series reaffirms Sydney as Australia’s cultural capital and a global hub for the arts, where art and creativity are celebrated and nurtured. It is going to be a highlight for so many visitors from interstate and overseas next summer,” Minister for Tourism and the Arts Ben Franklin said in a statement.

Louise Bourgeois: Has the Day Invaded the Night or Has the Night Invaded the Day? will be showcased from November 25, 2023 to April 28, 2024 and Kandinsky will be displayed from November 4, 2023 to March 10, 2024. Get more information here.
